Park Information:

Grandfather Mountain State Park

Located in Avery, Caldwell, and Watauga counties 20 miles southwest of Boone, Grandfather Mountain State Park showcases a stunning mountain known for severe weather and challenging terrain that has hikers scrambling along cliffs, gripping cables and climbing up ladders.It also boasts an unmatched ecological diversity that has been recognized as a United Nations International Biosphere Reserve. The state parkland sits between privately owned Grandfather Mountain attraction (admission fee charged) and Blue Ridge Parkway trails managed by the National Park Service.

Description of Work:
In addition to Grandfather Mountain State Park, this position will also be responsible for management of Yellow Mountain State Natural Area and the three mountain bogs state natural areas. This position has total accountability for the administration and supervision of a state park in the areas of interpretationandenvironmental education, natural resource management, program management, law enforcement, search & rescue, emergency medical response, wildland fire suppression, and public relations. Specific duties include the hiring and supervisionof permanent employees; annual planning and prioritizing of parks needs; selection, training, development and directing park staff in a variety of occupations; developing and managing a park budget, establishing park work and operational standards and policies; resolve employee and visitor problems; guiding citizen support groups, interacting with local government, presenting interpretive programs to variety of audiences; developing and managing special events while managing a park's natural resources. Weekend and holiday work required.

Housing is not available with this position.

A skills assessment may be conducted during the interview. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Technical Knowledge:

  1. Education and/or experience in developing, interpreting, conducting and/or administering educational programs necessary to interpret ecological processes and manage natural and cultural resources.
  2. Must have experience in law enforcement, emergency medical and safety programs.

Human Resource Management:

  1. Must have experience in the purchasing processand supervision of personnel.

Program Management:

  1. Must be able to demonstrateoral and written communication skills necessary to perform duties.
  2. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and must adhere to DNCR Fleet Safety Policy guidelines.
Prior to employment, candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.

Must possess and maintain certification as a Special Peace Officer in accordance with the general statutes and provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Division. ? G.S. 17-C-10, GS 113-28.1.
Must possess and maintain EmergencyMedical Technician - Basic and CPR Certification.
Must possess and maintain FUNSAR, ICS-100, 200, 300.
Must possess and maintain all necessary wildland fire fighting certifications.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science or related from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of experience in area of assignment, three of which must be in a supervisory capacity; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
