Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for performing routine public health work in one of several public health programs. Work involves planning and developing public health education program activities and providing consultative services and technical assistance to program staff,
governmental agencies, and community organizations. The work is generally investigative, regulatory, educational and consultative in nature. Exercises no supervision.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be requiredto obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

This position is a "grant funded" position, therefore unclassifiedand has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.
Essential Job Functions

  • Implements evidence-based prevention initiatives to help the community improve and maintain their health.
  • May conduct outreach and maintains relationships with community and partner organizations regarding health initiatives.
  • Interviews persons in order to determine demographic, medically relevant information and risk factor data.
  • Contacts physicians, hospitals, and medical laboratories to obtain patient information.
  • Counsels patients concerning risk reduction and behavior modification.
  • Collects data for use in planning and evaluating the effectiveness of public health education programs.
  • Conducts data entry.
  • Provides public health education to individuals.
  • Serves as an education and information resource to the public on health and public health issues for the community.
  • May assist in collecting and preparing materials in response to public health information and report requests.
  • May train personnel.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework ina health - related field.
  • Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.
  • Phlebotomy experience.
  • Medical field/home visit experience.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own personal vehicle may at times be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted..

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 5 pounds; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, and walking to perform essential functions. Working conditions are primarily in an inside environment and out in the field. Must be willing to comply with all OSHA regulations and current immunization policies.
