Public Contact: Benefit Authorizers, Claims Specialists, Claims Examiners, and Customer Service Representatives.

The location for possible employment is 600 W Madison St, Chicago, IL 60661 in the Great Lakes Program Service Center or the Chicago Teleservice Center.

Benefit Authorizer

Once selected for the Benefit Authorizer position in SSA, you will make final determinations on benefit entitlement decisions. This includes having direct telephone contact with the public to resolve issues or discrepancies and provide them with their rights under Social Security laws. You will be responsible for adjusting established benefits and effectuating payments and using state-of-the-art computer technology to access and update information about claims.

Benefit Authorizers (BAs) determine if applicants are eligible to receive or continue receiving benefits and/or payments for various Social Security programs. They answer questions from callers to Social Security's 800 number telephone network, resolve issues or discrepancies and explain Social Security program information to the public.

Claims Specialist

Once selected for the Claims Specialist position in SSA, you will contribute to the Agency's mission through direct and personal service to the public. This includes speaking with beneficiaries about their rights under the Social Security laws, gathering facts and evidence to establish eligibility for benefits, making critical decisions to determine the amount of benefits paid to individuals, and using state-of-the-art computer technology to access and update information about claims.

Claims Specialists conduct interviews with the public to obtain, clarify, and verify information about initial and continuing eligibility for retirement, survivors, disability, health insurance benefits, and eligibility for supplemental security income including State supplements. In addition, they resolve discrepancies, clarify issues and make final decisions for initial and post-entitlement for benefits and payments; adjudicate and authorize entitlement or disallowance actions at all levels of difficulty and complexity under programs administered by SSA.

Claims Examiner (Debt Specialist)

Serves as a Debt Specialist with responsibilities concerning applicable laws and regulations on both titles II and XVI Social Security programs, payment issues and making determinations on beneficiaries' protests of overpayment determinations where SSA is directly involved or where the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) has assumed certification of payment responsibility.

Reviews and makes final determinations based on facts and applicable laws and regulations, on a variety of overpayment issues in titles II, XVI and XVIII cases. Contact debtors or field office personnel to develop or explain complex technical program overpayment issues, waivers and reconsideration requests and to obtain refunds, refund agreements or implement the next step in the recovery process. For Title II cases only, analyzes and evaluates all facts, evidence and issues previously determined and makes final determinations on requests for reconsideration of postentitlement determinations, including penalty assessments, and on requests for waiver of recovery.

Customer Service Representative

Once selected for the Customer Service Representative position in SSA, you will contribute to the Agency's mission through direct service to the public. This involves receiving incoming calls through SSA's National 800 number and conducting interviews to determining the nature of the call or provide information on SSA laws, rules and regulations and Medicare Insurance Programs; obtaining information in order to determine eligibility for programs administered by SSA; and using automation tools to access and update information about claims or potential eligibility.

Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) provide assistance to beneficiaries and the general public in person, by telephone, or in writing. CSRs conduct interviews to determine the nature of the caller's question or issue; explain technical information, gather facts, evaluate evidence, and take action to resolve problems relating to all Social Security programs.
